About Wellgate Farm

Wellgate Community Farm began its life in 1982, set up by volunteers as a project which would encourage local participation in all aspects of the Farm’s activity. The name Wellgate is derived from the two local estates from which the first volunteers came: Chadwell Heath and Marks Gate. The Farm offers local people, schools and groups an invaluable opportunity to experience a working farm and its animals which include: ponies, cows, goats, sheep, pig, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys

Apple

Apple Weekend

Saturday 15th October and Sunday 16th October 2011

10am - 4pm each day

‘The fruit of apples do differ in greatness, forme, colour and taste; some covered with red skin, others yellowe or greene, varying indefinitely according to soyle and climate....’ (John Gerarde 1597). Over the years we have bred or chanced upon hundreds of varieties of apples that suit the vagaries of the British weather and taste. Their names alone are almost poetic such as D’Arcy spice, Tyderman’s Late Orange, Orlean’s Reinette or Eregmont Russet. Many of them bear the names of the people who raise them.

Apple Day is a national celebration of local traditions and distinctiveness using the apple as its symbol. The festival is celebrated each year at Thames Chase Forest Centre. This year it will be held on the 15th and 16th October. A variety of country crafts, skills, traditions and produce will be on display or for sale including over 20 varieties of locally grown English apples.
