Forestry Commission
The Forestry Commission has been a major partner organisation
in Thames Chase in recent years.
The Commission is responsible for the management of
the forests and woodlands owned by the nation. In
England alone, it manages almost 1,000 square miles
(250,000 hectares) of land for the production of timber,
but also increasingly for the benefit of the environment
and for recreation.
Between 2000 and 2003, the Forestry Commission invested
around £3.6million of government money in Thames
Chase: creating new publicly accessible community
woodlands close to where people live and work. Additional
funding was provided by the Cleanaway Havering Riverside
Trust. In these 3 years, the Commission acquired over
330ha (815 acres) of land, planted 400,000 trees and
built 24km (15 miles) of accessible paths. This was
