Forestry Commission

The Forestry Commission has been a major partner organisation in Thames Chase in recent years.

The Commission is responsible for the management of the forests and woodlands owned by the nation. In England alone, it manages almost 1,000 square miles (250,000 hectares) of land for the production of timber, but also increasingly for the benefit of the environment and for recreation.

Between 2000 and 2003, the Forestry Commission invested around £3.6million of government money in Thames Chase: creating new publicly accessible community woodlands close to where people live and work. Additional funding was provided by the Cleanaway Havering Riverside Trust. In these 3 years, the Commission acquired over 330ha (815 acres) of land, planted 400,000 trees and built 24km (15 miles) of accessible paths. This was over a total of 10 sites:

Berwick Glades

Bonnetts Wood

Cely Woods

Folkes Lane Woodland

Harold Court Woods

Mardyke Woods

Pages Wood

Thames Chase Forest Centre

Tylers Wood
